How to Evaluate a Broker or Trading Platform Independently

Platform reviews online are frequently written by parties with commercial incentives. Learning to run your own evaluation is therefore a core trading skill. The checklist below is the same structure we apply in our Firstrade24 review and every other platform assessment on this site.

1. Legal entity and regulation

Identify which company would hold your account and which authority supervises it. Check the regulator's own public register rather than the platform's claims. Note that a group may operate several entities under different regimes with materially different protections.

2. Client fund custody

Are client funds segregated from company funds, and where are they held? Is there a compensation scheme, and what is its per-client ceiling? These answers should be findable in published legal documents, not inferred from marketing copy.

  • Segregation of client money from operating funds.
  • Named custodian banks or clearing arrangements.
  • Applicable investor compensation scheme and coverage limit.
  • Negative balance protection policy, where relevant.

3. Full cost disclosure

A credible platform publishes a complete fee schedule covering spreads, commission, financing, conversion, inactivity and withdrawals. Missing categories are themselves a finding. Build the annual cost model described in our fees and spreads guide.

4. Instrument coverage and market access

Coverage matters only relative to your plan. A platform offering thousands of instruments you will never trade adds nothing; one missing the single market you specialise in is disqualified regardless of everything else.

5. Execution and order handling

Look for documented order types, published execution policy, and any available execution quality statistics. Absence of an execution policy document is a meaningful gap for anyone trading actively.

6. Platform stability and tooling

Charting depth, alerting, mobile parity, uptime history and data reliability determine daily experience. Public status pages and app store review patterns over time are more useful than a handful of recent testimonials.

7–10. Support, withdrawals, education and transparency

Test support responsiveness before funding. Read the withdrawal policy for timelines, methods and thresholds. Assess whether educational material teaches or merely markets. Finally, weigh transparency itself: platforms that publish detailed, dated, specific documentation are easier to hold accountable than those relying on general claims.

Apply this checklist yourself, then compare your conclusions with our Firstrade24 review and our published research methodology. Independent verification always beats a borrowed opinion — including ours.
